Photo editor Dennis Dimick describes how details in an image add to a story.

Cut It?
"We used a similar photo for the article's opening spread," says photo editor Dennis Dimick. "That shot was taken much closer to the trees, so you can see the texture of the bark on the trunks. You can also determine that the reason the trees are dead is because they're standing in water. You can't quite make that out in this picture."
Or Keep It?
"This is a very interesting photo on its own," Dimick continues. "It makes you wonder what's going on. The light on the trees is beautiful, and the contrast of the warm sunlight against the cold blue of the background is very striking. It's got great shadows, and the moon gives it an added element of appeal."

Eccentric Salton Sea
Resort Remnants
Dying palm trees—victims of salty floodwater—are all that remain of what was once the posh Salton Bay Yacht Club. Built in 1960, the society hot spot attracted such celebrities as actors Desi Arnaz and Johnny Weissmuller.
