Another day of molten heat in the Irrawaddy River Delta propels a dockworker into the river during his lunch break in the town of Bogale. From its source on the Tibetan border to its mouth on the palm-fringed shores of the Andaman Sea, the Irrawaddy cuts through the heart of Myanmar (Burma), offering its hard-pressed people many natural gifts. Its waters irrigate rice fields, provide protein-rich catches of fish, and carry passengers through a land where few decent roads exist.
