A Prince Who's Paying Attention
Photograph by Catherine Karnow

Trailed by members of his staff, Prince Charles talks with architect Craig Hamilton about renovating historic structures on a Herefordshire estate acquired by the Duchy of Cornwall six years ago. As the 24th Duke of Cornwall, Charles has taken a far more active role in managing the largely rural duchy than his predecessors. Whether it's supporting the survival of family farms in the uplands of Dartmoor, or directing the restoration of neglected buildings like the 19th-century chapel above, the prince has spent much of the past 40 years, he says, trying to remake the duchy as a "more personal" operation—a family business he can hand on to his elder son, Prince William, in better shape than he found it.
