Misjudged Hyenas
JUNE 2005
|
Keeping Watch Photograph by Anup and Manoj Shah
Two hyenas watch clan members file home at dawn in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park. Hyenas live in clans of 80 or more individuals. Home base for a clan is its den, primarily a place for cubs to retreat into in times of danger or when mothers are out hunting wildebeests and other migratory herbivores. Contrary to their reputation as scruffy scavengers, hyenas are excellent hunters, killing most of the food they eat.
