A Growing Legacy
Photograph by Melissa Farlow
Twisted and gnarled with age, a hundred-year-old English beech stands sentinel in the beech grove of Boston's Arnold Arboretum, one of Olmsted's favorite projects. Owned by the city but leased and managed by Harvard University, the 265-acre (107-hectare) arboretum displays a collection of trees for researchers and a popular strolling grounds within Olmsted's Emerald Necklace of public parks around the city.
