Flight of Fancy
Photograph by Melissa Farlow
A straight, cardiac-arresting stairway wasn't exactly what Olmsted had in mind when he designed Mount Royal Park around a steep hill in Montreal. Headstrong and hot-tempered, Olmsted often ran afoul of local politicians who wanted to change his plans to suit their own whims. Here in Mount Royal, Olmsted is finally getting his way. In 2003 this staircase was demolished and replaced with a zigzag version more in line with Olmsted's vision for the park, with ten landings to enjoy the literally breathtaking view.
