A Family Town
Photograph by Melissa Farlow
"X" marks the intersection of Southern Parkway, West Southland Boulevard, New Cut Road, and Taylor Boulevard at the main entrance to Iroquois Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Dominated by a rugged knob once heavily used by Native Americans, Iroquois Park is one of three major Olmsted parks that now anchor sections of the city. Louisville's parks and parkways were the last of the great urban park systems Olmsted designed. His sons John Charles Olmsted and Frederick Jr. continued working in Louisville after their father's retirement in 1895. The Olmsteds eventually worked on more than 120 projects there, leaving their distinctive mark on much of the city.
