The Heart of Central Park

Musicians enrich the night (and themselves) in the arcade of Bethesda Terrace, the project that launched Frederick Law Olmsted's career and inspired urban parks around the nation. This terrace is the "masterpiece within the masterpiece," says Central Park historian Sara Cedar Miller. Designed by Olmsted's partner Calvert Vaux, and imbued with richly detailed carvings of flora and fauna, this open-air terrace was created to be the focal point of an otherwise carefully crafted natural experience. Vaux once summed up his philosophy as "Nature first, and 2nd & 3rd—Architecture after a while."
