An Electrifying Scene

Harnessing the heat of geothermal activity, a power plant on the south shore of the Salton Sea emits steam as it produces electricity. Ten geothermal energy plants currently tap into a reservoir of superheated water more than 3,000 feet (900 meters) below the surface to crank out 340 megawatts each hour, enough to supply 340,000 homes. Much of the reservoir lies underneath the Salton Sea, but the recent water transfer deal could drop the sea nearly 20 feet (six meters) over the next 15 years, possibly allowing the geothermal energy industry to expand.
