Solemn Remembrance
Photograph by Christoph Gerigk
Red and white flowers representing the Polish national colors float above the wreck. Tossed there one day last August by Heinz Peters, a diplomat at the German Embassy in Poland who arrived on the ship in the background, the flowers were part of a memorial service. "May the people along the shores of the Baltic Sea never again witness war," says Peters. "It was the war started by Germany, which as a last and tragic consequence claimed the lives of those whom we today remember."
