Camels in Flannels
Photograph by George Steinmetz
Tied to stakes at a desert camp in Yemen, a pair of camels await their Bedouin masters. Their coverings protect them from wind, cold, and blowing sandand give them a sporty look. Legendary for their ability to carry loads weighing several hundred pounds for days without water, camels once offered the only reliable means of transportation in the Empty Quarter. Although the Bedouin increasingly use pick-up trucks, camels remain central to their culture, providing meat, milk, leather, wool, and dung, which is dried and used as fuel for fires.
