Home Sweet Home
Photograph by Alexandra Boulat

A Berber family stands framed in the doorway of their home near Imilchil in Morocco's High Atlas mountains. Berber families are patrilineal—headed by men—with brides leaving their childhood homes to follow their husbands. Yet today, as more men emigrate to cities to earn wages, women and children remain alone in the villages to sustain the culture of the Berbers, North Africa's indigenous people. Women teach the Berber language, Tamazight, to the next generation and eke out a subsistence living on mountain farms.
