Canada's U.S. Tip
Photograph by Penny De Los Santos
A straight line of houses clearly marks the border between the town of Tsawwassen in British Columbia, Canada, to the left, and Point Roberts, Washingtona small chunk of the United States that looks like an oddity of mapmaking. It's more an orphan of precision: In 1846 the U.S. and Britain adopted the 49th parallel as the dividing line between America and Canada. Point Robertsa five-square-mile (thirteen-square-kilometer) tidbitfell below that line and has belonged to the U.S. ever since. The community has something of a split identity where the traditions of both nations blend.
