With the first nips of frost in the air, vine maple leaves near Sol Duc Falls turn crimson and gold. All but 5 percent of the park is designated wilderness, located within easy driving distance of Seattle and other urban areas. Yet no highways bisect the park since all roadways end at trailheads. From there visitors proceed on foot or horseback, preserving the park's most inaccessible areas for those willing to exert themselves.
