Dressed for Winter
Photograph by Melissa Farlow
A craggy pinnacle stabbing the sky echoes the crowns of trees, composing a gauzy winter portrait near Hurricane Ridge, blanketed by up to 35 feet (10 meters) of snow a year. Olympic boasts towering stands of cedar, fir, spruce, and hemlock. Based on girth, height, and volume of wood, some of these trees are deemed "champions"among the largest of their types in the world.
