When flickers are away, others come to stay. A boreal owlthe smallest of Alaska's owl speciesfinds a cozy safe house in a niche groomed and inhabited by flickers in a previous year. Red squirrels (who, like the owl, will eat flicker eggs and young), voles, and chickadees have also used this nest.
