Feeding Frenzy

A cavity carved out of a rotting black spruce in Montana makes a perfect hideout for a growing family. For about 25 days flicker parents (like the female above) fatten up their young with regurgitated meals of ants and, occasionally, other insects and berries. "By the time they fledge, the nestlings may outweigh their parents," says photographer Michael Quinton, who has watched a similar scene play out many times in his Alaska backyard.
