Bottom Feeders
Photograph by Emory Kristof and R. Michael Cole
It's not vanity that induces a variety of rattail fish species to pose in front of a ropecam 6,000 feet (2,000 meters) below the surface. Besides a camera, the device includes baitliquid tuna pumped from tanks as well as chum in a bucket. The fish looming large in the foreground and the one skimming the seafloor are giant rattailsbottom dwellers that can reach nearly six feet (two meters) in length.
