Eye in the Abyss

An alien visitor to Monterey Canyon emerges dripping from the sea after a journey deep below the surface. The device, with bright yellow spheres for flotation, is a ropecam—literally a digital video camera on a rope, designed to go as deep as 15,000 feet (4,600 meters). Here National Geographic electronics technician R. Michael Cole hauls the contraption onto the deck of the locally based Shana Rae. Cole and a team of Geographic photo engineers helped photographer Emory Kristof develop the device so Kristof could capture deep-sea images without the complexity and expenses of manned submarines and ROVs (remotely operated vehicles).
