Nature's Brutal Bounty
Photograph by Yva Momatiuk and John Eastcott
Lured by the scent of a fresh kill, a grizzly bear easily chased away the wolves. Grasping the moose's hip in its powerful jaws, the bear yanked the heavy carcass onto a gravel bar, then tore large chunks of flesh from the moose's hindquarter. One moose can provide several hundred pounds of red meat, a rich source of proteinand a key to survivalfor carnivores facing Alaska's long, barren winters.
