The Graduate
Photograph by Jim Richardson
The entire senior class of Peerless High School in the hamlet of Peerless, Montana, poses for a graduation picture in front of the local grain elevator. Chris Roos was the only senior in the student body of 14 kids last year, but it didn't bother him one bit. "In school I had every opportunityart, athletics, music, and drama," says Roos, currently studying mining engineering at Montana Tech in Butte, 500 miles (805 kilometers) away. Like many farm youth of the Plains, Roos says he'd like to return to his hometown someday to raise a family, though with no mines nearby, he admits it's unlikely.
