Custer's Last Dance
Photograph by Jim Richardson
George Armstrong Custer (at center left, portrayed by reenactor Tony Austin of Metchosin, British Columbia) and other cavalry officers take a turn on the dance floor at the Grand Ball in Hardin, Montana. Held each summer on the eve of the reenactment of the Battle of Little Bighorn, which was fought nearby, the ball gives some 200 costumed visitors a chance to try waltzes, schottisches, polkas, and the Virginia reel. "People take this very seriously," says coordinator Kathy Stenerson. "I'll dance, but I still want to sneak out back and have a cigarette."

Weather Conditions: Indoors Time of Day: Evening Lighting Techniques: I set up strobe lights to bounce off the ceiling. Special Equipment or Comments: I balanced the available light and the strobe light along with the exposure time to give a slight bit of blur for the motion and kept a close eye on "Lt. Colonel Custer" for the right moment. |
