Old-fashioned Horsepower
Photograph by José Azel
With the help of trusty draft horse Sal, assistant farm manager Brad Johnson plows the fields at the Chewonki Foundation, a nonprofit organization that teaches kids how they fit into nature and the world around them. Participants in Chewonki's educational programs learn about the environment and organic farming, tend livestock, milk cows, and grow their own food. "We want people to feel a connection to the land," says Betta Stothart, director of community relations at Chewonki. "We grow 14,000 pounds (6,350 kilograms) of organic food a year, and we definitely consume it all."
