Going for the Gold
Photograph by Steve Winter
With dreams of striking it rich, a gold miner maneuvers a pole he uses in his sluice-mining operation near the town of Shinbwiyang. Gold mania has transformed this once-sleepy village into a boomtown of at least 30,000 with a Wild West atmosphere. Ponds like the one above hold runoff waterpoisoned with mercury or cyanide used in gold miningthat will flow into the region's river system. Such threats to the environment add impetus to efforts to protect the valley's once pristine ecosystem.
