Rare Sighting

A Hoolock gibbon perches in the forest canopy, where it swings from limb to limb in search of fruit. Poaching and habitat destruction have drastically reduced the population of this primate, classified as endangered. To protect such species, the government created a 2,500-square-mile (6,500-square-kilometer) wildlife sanctuary in the Hukawng Valley and plans to add another 5,500 square miles (14,000 square kilometers) where hunting of some species for food would be allowed.
