Whooper Heaven
Photograph by Thomas D. Mangelsen
The rich pristine wetlands of Saskatchewan provide a stopover point for rare whoopers. Tallest of birds in North America, the whooping crane may stand five feet (1.5 meters), with wings spanning close to eight feet (two meters). Surviving flocks of the endangered crane breed in northern Canada and migrate 2,500 miles (4,000 kilometers) south to winter along the coast of Texas.
