A Dogged Faith
Photograph by Landon Nordeman
If you believe that radon exposure can benefit humans, then why not pets too? Ailing, aged canines (and a few cats too) seek relief from assorted ills in the Doggie Den, a separate, animal-friendly chamber within the Merry Widow Mine. "There's nothing wrong with Fozzy," at center, says her owner Heather Scott, who suffers from arthritis. "But I had to bring her with me, or she'd cause holy terror in the house."

Weather Conditions: Inside the mine Time of Day: Unrecorded Lighting Techniques: Nikon SB-28 off-camera. Special Equipment or Comments: I used a handheld flash inside the Merry Widow Mine. It's dark. Dark like a cave is dark. I had to use a flash with almost every image. I would lose track of time when I was in there, and did not know if it was morning, or evening, but that did not affect the light; it was always the same: dark. |
