Call to Prayer
Photograph by Mattias Klum
By blowing through a conch shell, Lama Zotpa, a senior monk at the Hanle gompa, or monastery, in a remote valley in northern India, signals to other monks that it's time to gather for their weekly prayer. Because the monastery is located in a restricted zone along a section of India's disputed border with China, the military bars access to most outsiders. Sheltered from the larger world, the valley's people have maintained much of their traditional culture, created centuries ago when ethnic Ladakhi herders adopted Tibetan Buddhism.
