Rural Legacy
Photograph by Peter Essick
A sunset in late summer finds 71-year-old Juan de la Cruz Romero on the long road home with his horse, his family, and their goats. It's time to hunker down for the winter on their farm in Neuquén Province in Argentina. In the spring, after the goats had given birth, the whole caravan of people and animals had moved to the high pastures of the Andes. The flock grazed and fattened there, the women turned goats' milk to cheese, and the men worked leather into lassos and saddles. De la Cruz Romero has made this annual migration all his life. His children grew up with it, and his teenage grandchildren are now carrying on the tradition.
