Seaside Ambassadors

Two-foot-tall (61-centimeter-tall) waddling bundles of waterproof feathers, Magellanic penguins greet all arrivals on the shore of San Julián Bay, Argentina, just as they did when explorer Ferdinand Magellan, their namesake, landed here in 1520 on his historic voyage around the horn of South America. With colonies all along the remote coasts of southern Argentina and Chile, these are the only penguins that breed on the Patagonian mainland. Commercial fishing has begun to threaten their future by depleting the once abundant schools of fish they feed on.
