Patagonian Grandeur
Photograph by Peter Essick
Rocks scoured by a retreating glacier overlook icy Lake Viedma in Glaciers National Park, Argentina. Grinding along valleys in the Andes Mountains between southern Argentina and Chile, interconnected glaciers that cover more than 5,000 square miles (10,000 square kilometers) make up the South American ice cap. Below this frozen expanse, Argentina's high steppe stretches eastward. There wild guanacos graze and herds of sheep spread across vast ranches called estancias. Elephant seals, sea lions, and penguins populate both the Atlantic and Pacific shores of Patagonia, which sweeps south toward Antarctica.
