Summer Calm
Photograph by Susie Post Rust
A short-sleeved boy enjoys a balmy day on Atka in the western Aleutian Islands. One-hundred-mile-an-hour (160-kilometer-an-hour) winds, dense fog, and 30-foot (10-meter) seas are not unheard of here, yet the Unangas, as the residents are known, have inhabited the island for at least 2,000 years. Remote and rarely visited by outsiders, Atka remains a stronghold of traditional culture, with the Aleut language still spoken in a quarter of all homes. Like their ancestors, residents depend on fishing and subsistence hunting to survive.
