Reaching deep into a cold, dark storm-petrel burrow on St. Lazaria, researcher Kendra Womack, front, and Victoria Vosburg use bare fingers to probe for an incubated egg. Selected burrows are monitored throughout the season to measure the reproductive success of the colony. Unlike most birds, storm-petrels can leave their eggs incubated for up to a week and forage for food some 40 miles (60 kilometers) away.

Special Equipment or Comments: Since we were under trees, I decided not to use Fujichrome Velvia 50. I thought it would give the photo too much contrast since some spots of light were shining through.
