Equine Tomb
Photograph by Sisse Brimberg
The work is ready to begin at one of the many graves in the football-field-size burial mound, or kurgan, known as Arzhan-2. Beneath this pile of rocks lie the remains of 14 horses, sacrificed for their owners' afterlife. One of humankind's earliest and most formidable equestrian cultures, Scythians cleaved to their horses in life and death.
