Beating Hearts
Photograph by Bill Curtsinger
Using a simple heart-rate monitor, veterinarian Aleksija Neimanis checks the pulse of a rescued harbor porpoise as fellow researchers keep it wet and take a blood sample from its fluke. If the porpoise shows any signs of stress, it's quickly returned to the water. "They're freaky little animals," says researcher Ann Pabst, who is studying how harbor porpoises regulate body heat. "I've watched a few of them just stop breathing and die."
