Tragedy's Wake
Photograph by Victor José Cobo
In a matter of seconds a routine maneuver turned fatal in October 2001, when the Westcott capsized and sank while approaching a tanker. The Coast Guard concluded that Capt. Cathy Nasiatka approached the tanker too far astern and got caught in the ship's turbulent draft, but that has been a matter of dispute. Nasiatka and deckhand Dave Lewis drowned in the accident. The Westcott was retrieved and restored, but now every voyage carries a heavy load: the memory of friends lost in tragedy.
