Sawmill workers cut logs into lumber in Solu to supply a building boom in Namche and other villages frequented by foreign visitors. Trees grow slowly at such altitudes, and high demand for fuel wood and construction materials has led to forest degradation in the region. Environmental concerns have spawned tree-planting programs in Sagarmatha National Park, which encompasses most of Khumbu.
