Divine Intervention
Photograph by Robb Kendrick

Prayer flags gently waft above young Buddhist monks at Khumjung monastery as they prepare for the summer festival of Dumje. Despite the influx of Western tourists and the invasion of American pop culture, the Sherpas' adherence to venerable religious ceremonies remains strong. Buddhism even gets a boost from tourist dollars. Newfound prosperity has enabled more families to follow the tradition of sending their second-born sons to the monasteries to become monks.
