Three young Sherpa girls attending a Kathmandu boarding school start the day with bread, tea, and conservative school uniforms, yet the icons of Western pop culture—such as slain rapper Tupac Shakur—are everywhere. Back in Khumbu, Sherpa children of more modest means often attend schools built by the Himalayan Trust, a nonprofit organization founded by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1964.
