A Home On High
Photograph by Robb Kendrick

Bearing a backpack crammed with climbing gear, a porter leaves Namche Bazaar, hub of an international tourism industry in the Himalaya of northeastern Nepal. Known by many as Namche, the remote village of 1,500 residents has changed markedly since 1953 when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first reached the summit of nearby Mount Everest. Though cybercafés and satellite phone service are available for the globe-trotting mountaineers and trekkers, most get to Namche the old-fashioned way: they walk.
