Fanni: The Crazy One?
Photograph by Anup Shah
The Tanzanian field staff at Gombe calls Fanni "Kichaa" ("sick in the head") because of her unpredictable behavior. While other Gombe mothers dote on their infants, Fanni sometimes treats her offspring with cold indifference. While weaning Fudge (left) after Fundi (right) was born, she once climbed a tree too large for Fudge to scale and left him sitting at the bottom, screaming. [For more on the younger generation, see Gombe's New Generation.]
