Freud: The Thinker
Photograph by Anup Shah
Frodo's older brother, Freud, was the previous alpha male, but ruled with a laid-back, diplomatic hand. The only male who could keep Frodo in line, Freud was severely weakened by scabies in 1998. Frodo seized the opportunity, attacked and dominated Freud, and led him in front of the group. Frodo then unexpectedly threw rocks at the other males to keep them from assaulting his deposed brother. Retirement seems to become Freud. "He's just such a nice, lovely chimp," says researcher Elizabeth Vinson Lonsdorf. "I have this great memory of him lying by the stream, staring up at the waterfall. He seemed deep in thought, contemplating whatever it is that chimpanzees contemplate."
