Fifi: The Matriarch
Photograph by Anup Shah
When Jane Goodall first set foot in Tanzania's Gombe Stream Game Reserve in 1960, she couldn't have imagined that her animal subjects would become stars of the animal kingdom, appearing in numerous films, TV specials, and magazine articles. Fifi, believed to be the only chimpanzee now at Gombe that predates Jane Goodall's arrival, has lived through it all. Born around 1958, she is the most productive wild chimpanzee mother at Gombe, giving birth to her ninth offspring in October. Eight of her offspring, including four-year-old Flirt, above, have survived.
