A hands-on entrepreneur fetches a customer's selection at a corral outside Doha. Though Qataris have ample meat and grow some fruits and vegetables on irrigated land, they must import most of their food. With agriculture accounting for only one percent of the country's gross domestic product, the government is pushing for more self-sufficiency in food production. That's a challenge, since water is at a premium. In this parched desert nation, desalination plants furnish more than 90 percent of potable water. |
