Breathing More Freely

Lively spirits drift through the corniche in Doha, capital of the small Persian Gulf country of Qatar. In this Islamic nation of some 600,000 residents, virtually all Qatari women wear a full-body cloak called an abaya when outside the home. Older and more traditional women also put on a mask called the betula. Yet this strict Islamic society and monarchy is modernizing. More women are entering the business world, and they've recently been granted the right to vote and run for public office. |
