A long exposure reveals a red tongue of lava oozing from a spatter cone. Known as effusive flows, these eruptions are relatively benign—a way for the mountain to blow off steam. But Ol Doinyo Lengai has also experienced powerful explosive eruptions, most recently in 1966 and 1993.
