Snub-nosed Youth Photograph by Tim Laman
The dainty appendage on this young male proboscis monkeys face will grow as he doesand eventually curl down over his mouth. Perched on a bough in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary in northern Borneo, this youth lives in a group of bachelor males. When he reaches maturity, hell go in search of females. The most successful adult males preside over harem groups consisting of several females and their offspring. Apparently the dominant male doesnt want any young competitors: Male monkeys are forced out by the age of two. |
