Family Vacation Photograph by David Doubilet
A southern right whale mother and her white calf move through South Africas east coast waters. Largely winter visitors to this area, migrating up from Antarctic feeding grounds, these plankton-eaters are increasing in numbers, though populations are just 20 percent of what they were 30 years ago. Legal protection has helped, and the decline of some other baleen whalestheir immediate competitorsmay also play a role in the right whales progress. |
