Its Not Easy Being Green Photograph by Peter Essick
Flourishing in old, undisturbed forests, lichens like these Lobaria in northern Sweden are destroyed by clear-cut logging, and they can be damaged by air pollution from distant sources, especially the industrial sulfur dioxide emissions that are a major component of acid rain. Though the genus is not endangered in Sweden, pollution and logging have eliminated Lobaria from large parts of its range in North America and Europe. |
