Julia Pogue, 7, contemplates life from a magnolia branch in the guise of her favorite alter ego: a blue-and-purple tie-dyed jaguar. She climbs to her perch nearly every day. Mature magnolia trees are the exception rather than the rule in many of Carys newer subdivisions, where fast-growing Bradford pears have eclipsed the stately magnolias, dogwoods, and oaks of older neighborhoods.
